I am already loving this, because you have the premise of two characters who are in love misunderstanding one another, and you have made it so in character. Sam's sense of worthlessness paired with a very nice reflection on Gabriel's part of his own actions... I was worried that this would be overplayed, but you've hit the two characters just right. Oh, and Gabriel breaking up without saying the words, just waiting for Sam to catch up. That felt very in character for him.
